The Vale of Eréch

Lord Brandon's Court

A small group of veterans and adventurers have been summoned to Lord Brandon’s Court*. There they won the favor and trust of the Court and Brandon revealed to them their charge—to liberate the colonies from The King Over Sea! All of our heroes gladly excepted, save one.

Biffendane expressed that he was always ready for a fight (and profit). Karres spoke true the words of her goddesses, “All things must end”. Suul’rach simply growled his consent and smiled grimly for the chance to avenge his race.

Sirannon, however, did not wish to risk plunging his people into another brutal war. He would not bring the wrath of the King Over Sea on his people.

The next day during a small and private feast held in their honor Lady Samantha Eréch was poisoned! Lord Brandon’s servant Steward Kinsley was actually a doppleganger who lead a group of assassin’s in an attack on the Brandon’s castle.

Our heroes made short work of the would be assassin’s in a bloody battle in the square outside the castle. Brandon and the members of his court ran outside, High Mage Kalimon had stabilized Lady Samantha, but she had fallen victim to the poison and lay in a deep coma. A copper symbol of two crossed feathers found on ‘Steward Kinsley’ identified her as a member of a defunct branch of the Thieves Guild once led by a man known only as Raven. With her final breath the doppleganger revealed the reason for the attack as revenge. She then transformed into fair and strong Eladrin woman, then reverted to her true form—dead.

The normally collected Brandon was outraged and asked our heroes to bring him the head of Raven. Our heroes calmed him, but swore they would help. Brandon apologized for his temper. Through some investigation it was revealed to our heroes that Raven had nearly stolen the heart of Lady Samantha. This caused much emnity between Brandon and Raven, but ALady Samantha was able to convince Brandon that a truce with the Thieves Guild was needed. Raven left the Vale, and the Thieves Guild became an instrumental part of the war effort. Something had happened to break the pact, and Brandon needs to know what.

It seems war against the King will have to wait.

The Feathered Crossing

After befriending the captain of the Vale guard, and shaking down one of his informants, our heroes found the location of one of Raven’s guild hideouts – The Feathered Crossing tavern.

Our heroes arrived and interrupted (at sword point) some sort of barter between a Dragonborn (Kreel) and the barkeep. In the store room below the tavern they found a secret entrance to the sewers. There they were faced by a very formidable Kobold (Mort the Kobold) and an deadly pendulum scythe trap.

Our heroes push further into the guild hideout, routing a large group of bandits and their gnome leader as they attempt to flee.

Inside what appeared to be some sort of interrogation chamber was a dark one, a vile goat legged creature from the Shadowfell. Through the skillful use diplomacy, lies and intimidation the dark one revealed his employer – The King Over Sea!

According the the dark one the King Over Sea had charged him with ‘taking care of Raven’, and to then inform Raven’s Guild of Raven’s fate. The ensuing chaos would undoubtedly break the pact between Raven and Brandon, a fact the dark one seemed to care little about.

Our heroes also found a book that appeared to be a ledger written in some type of thieves cant. The ledger was full of instructions, jobs and inventory – all of which pointed our heroes to the village of Kleine.

Lost in the Wilderness
A swamp in the far north?

Our heroes hid themselves in the caravan of Princess Auren Delieen as it made its way east to Coldmarsh Keep. Once they were closer to the Rivertop Wood they made their way south towards Kleine.

They were surprised to find that the forest was unnaturally swampy, and became lost in the wilderness. After stumbling upon two vine horrors, they attempted to take refuge in some sort of underground tomb. After routing a small, but powerful, group of Wererats taking refuge in the tomb they were able to rest before moving on.

The tomb was made up of one long hall and only one room. At the end of the hall stood two statues, one which had been destroyed, the other was a very large and imposing statue of a dragonborn paladin adorned in a helm which invoked the holy symbol of Bane. On the stone sarcophogus inside there were several names worn away by vandalism and time, but the last line was legible: ap Dalen

The Mighty Dragon of Kleine

The heroes encounter a lizardman ambush once they find the road. This is odd because the norther climate of this region should be inhospitable to lizardfolk.

Once our heroes arrive in Kleine they are met by the city guard and Councilman Baur. The outlying fields of Kleine have been destroyed by lizardfolk and orcs (seperate attacks but equally costly). They also find out that Lake Ostrel in the King’s Wood has reportedly been turned into a swamp by some dark magic.

They are introduced to Berthold Mallison, Paladin of Erathis, who has taken over as leader of what passes as the Kleine Militia.

In the morning it is revealed why Baur is skeptical of our heroes when another group of adventurer’s return with a special gift for the town. These heroes had been hired to investigate the swamp and provide defenses for the people of Kleine. Instead they brought back a baby black dragon which made short work of its cage, and shorter work of two of the ‘adventurers’.

Our heroes were able to defeat the dragon with no damage or loss of life to Kleine. They tell Berthold about the ruins they found and he indicates it may be a find of great importance. He alludes that ‘Dalen’ may have some connection to the last Emperor destroyed by the King Over the Sea. He leaves for the ruins immediately.
